Mobile gifts for the museum

In 2008, "The Blue Omnibuses" in Holte donated two Mercedes buses to the Tramway Museum. One is a Mercedes O311 1956 with a long bonnet that has been with the Blue Omnibuses for its whole life.

In 2008, "The Blue Omnibuses" in Holte donated two Mercedes buses to the Tramway Museum. One is a Mercedes O311 1956 with a long bonnet that has been with the Blue Omnibuses for its whole life.

Both buses stood for many years in a farm building in Vejleby near Skibby, where the intention was to restore the oldest one (O311 from 1956). This work commenced by removing the front windscreen and the left side of the bus.

In 2008, the owner of the buses offered them to the Tramway Museum. Unfortunately, the museum has major space problems, but has recently leased yet another large hall in Alsted, west of Ringsted. Here the buses can be stored with a view to later restoration and exhibition at Skjoldenæsholm, when a new exhibition hall is built.

On Saturday 25 April, the two hired flatbed trucks arrived at the farm in Vejleby to load the two buses and drive them to their new home. Here they were unloaded, and the oldest one was towed into the hall by a tractor. The other bus (O312 from 1960) was connected to a large starter battery with a couple of long jump leads, and, hey presto- the motor started straight away! This was incredible when you consider that it hadn't run for about 15 years. The bus could then drive in by itself to its new berth, where it will 'sleep' until restoration can commence. The condition of the vehicle must first be carefully evaluated, however, as it is so finely well-preserved both inside and out that it would be a shame to take it to pieces to provide parts for the older bus - which was the original intention when it was first acquired many years ago.

The Tramway Museum would like to say many thanks to the Blue Omnibuses in Holte for this mobile gift. In addition, the bus company has also donated a large number of spare parts, etc., which can also be used with some of the other elderly buses at the museum. Thank you!
