Christmas at the museum

On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December the museum was open for the sale of Christmas trees.

The lovely warm Christmas café in Valby Old Depot offered traditional fare such as mulled wine, dumplings, hot cocoa, coffee and the museum's own "tram beer".

Father Christmas and his helpers entertained in the depot. True to tradition, they arrived on board the horse tram Hønen ("The Hen"), which was drawn by reindeer.

On Saturday there was also entertainment with a male voice choir, while on Sunday a group of four musicians played delightful Christmas melodies in the café.

At the Eilers Eg turning loop there were sales of fine, newly-felled Christmas trees as well as roasted almonds - a new hit.

Visitors poured in on both days, bringing the total number of guests to around 1,700 for the weekend, so the museum's many volunteers had a couple of very busy days - but they are used to that at these Christmas events.

Veteran steam trains were laid on from Copenhagen Central Station for both days, pulled by locomotives S 736 and Pr 908, each with no less than nine large passenger carriages, a goods wagon and a post carriage.

In Hvalsø the Tram Museum's 10 large buses, seven of them veteran buses, stood ready to take the many guests to the Tram Museum and back, so that guests could also return to Copenhagen by steam train.

The guests' prams, pushchairs, etc., were transported to and from the museum, and on the return journey the packed Christmas trees were also taken to Hvalsø, where they were all loaded onto the goods wagon, which was filled almost to capacity.
